Where to film a horror movie: Our best horror movie filming locations

Horror movie filming locations are for life, not just Halloween! A great horror film starts with the right setting. Long before the first scream, the location is already working its magic, by setting the tone, building tension, and making the audience feel just a little uneasy. That’s why good location scouting is crucial. You need a place that doesn’t just look the part but has the bones to be transformed into something truly unsettling.

Think beyond the obvious. A grand old house might not come with peeling wallpaper and ominous claw marks, but does it have the long, empty hallways and looming doorways that set the scene? A forest is classic, but does it have that perfect balance of beauty and menace - the kind of place where a little mist and clever lighting could turn it into something otherworldly? Even modern spaces can be made eerie with the right treatment - an empty brutalist high-rise, a sterile office block after dark, or a suburban home where everything feels just a little too perfect.

It’s also worth noting that filming a horror movie (or indeed, any kind of move) takes a village - so there need to be space for the crew!

The best locations aren’t just about what’s already there, but what they can become. With the right dressing, lighting and sound design, even the most ordinary space can be turned into something deeply unsettling. Find the right foundation, and the rest will follow.

Whether you’re looking for horror movie filming locations for a budget indie to be released this year, or you’re planning an 18 month timeline for a big budget release, our shortlist below should help you find the perfect film-friendly properties to properly terrify.

Binfield Court

Let’s start the list off strong with a detached country house with plenty of space for your scary story to unfold. From helipad to spiral staircase, conservatory, large grounds with barns and stables, pool, tennis court and plenty of period-inspired features… if you’re not excited by this period property film location then you might need a new project. Or at the very least, to book mark this house for a future project.

Broadlands Estate

With 1300 acres of farmland, 1050 acres of grassland, and 980 acres of woodland, this is the ideal countryside filming location for a brief requiring a lot of exterior shots. The country house on the estate almost feels like a side note after you’ve seen the views of the river and the orangery! The interior of the house is not available for filming, but fortunately we have many other country houses in our portfolio if you need one.

Deerhurst Road

The house that started our business over 20 years ago, this film shoot location has some excellent retro elements that give a cool edge to any film project. Need a disco room for an important scene? Sorted. Writers insisting you have to find a film-friendly location with a roof deck and an indoor pool? No problem.

Fabric

Yes, THE Fabric. The nightclub originally built as an underground cold store for Smithfield Meat Market can accommodate up to 1,500 people. Comprised of 5 distinct areas over 25,000 square feet, the Victorian architecture had been renovated to have an industrial feel with many original elements retained. If you’re in need of a nightclub or similar space to film in in London, there is no better location. It also has excellent technical specifications, so you can give the sound crew the good news now.

Foyers Lodge

Popular with all kinds of film makers, the lodge is a stunning Victorian retreat during the summer months and an iconic country house filming location during the winter. Take a closer look and imagine a dram after shooting here.

Greengate

Nestling in Surrey is this historic estate with plenty of privacy (so your talent can scream in peace) and oodles of historic grand details. The greenery is also stunning, particularly the wisteria. With comparatively less grounds than others on this list, with ‘only’ three acres, there is still a huge amount of diversity in the rooms available, so plenty of space for horror movie filming.

Hoxton Heights

With its proximity to a council estate and edgier vibe, Hoxton heights has a lot of crisp lines and flat surfaces internally. With an overall feel of mid century modern but in a minimalistic sort of way, it’s a popular spot for TV production filming locations as well as smaller film location productions. It’s also got some fantastic natural light.

Mill House

Mill House has six reception rooms, a cinema room, an outdoor swimming pool, and plenty of wood beams throughout the property. Neutrally decorated, with a range of natural material floorings, it could be set dressed into something fabulously rustic or more modern. Have a closer look at this North London gem here.
